Why see a Psychiatrist?
There are times in some people’s life when talking with someone isn’t quite enough to get through to the other side of one’s mental health challenges. In some of these instances, meeting with a psychiatrist to get a prescription for psychotropic medications is found to be helpful in the healing process or in generally stabilizing mood, etc. Examples of medications prescribed include anti-depression agents, anti-anxiety agents, stimulants (for treating ADHD), mood stabilizers or anti-panic agents.
What is a Board Certified Psychiatrist?
A psychiatrist has a medical background, passing the MCAT, successfully completing a medical doctorate, and then spends an additional 4 years in a residency program, focusing on psychiatric services. After completing this, the psychiatrist has 7 years to pass the national board exams. This board certification process ensures that the psychiatrist is providing quality mental health services that are up to par with nationally recognized standards for education, knowledge, experience and skills. After passing the national board exams, s/he is considered board certified.
After becoming board certified, a psychiatrist may choose to specialize in a certain area, for instance Child Psychiatry or Adolescent Psychiatry. Such specializations require additional training and exams beyond medical school and the initial 4 years of residency.
