Overview
OCD, or obsessive compulsive disorder, is an anxiety disorder that results in irrational and unreasonable fears, thoughts, and obsessions. These often lead to behaviors that a patient repeats ad nauseam for no particular reason. Usually, these obsessions are centered around a single theme, such as fear of germs, that will compel individuals to compulsively wash their hands often and for a long time, even until they are very chapped and sore. No matter how hard they try, the thoughts keep coming back; an unfortunate cycle that is characteristic of OCD. The only real way to fight back against the thoughts is to see a qualified OCD mental health professional.
Symptoms
Obsessive compulsive disorders are often identified by obsessions. Having an OCD obsession is one that is:
- repeated,
- persistent,
- and unwanted.
These impulses, thoughts, and images that pop up into your head are completely involuntary and often make little sense to you. You cannot control them and your only sense of relief is to give in to them. OCD obsessions are more than a pet peeve or something you often do. You feel as though you must do it.
Causes
There is no sure cause for OCD, and so no OCD mental health professional can be sure about what the cause may be in any one patient, but there are three main theories. The biology of the patient and the way their brain functions might influence their OCD, as well as their environment. In addition, the patient’s serotonin levels might have an impact.
Treatment
Medications are available for OCD, and many are very powerful antidepressants prescribed and recommended by a trained OCD counselor or therapist. Psychotherapy is another route your counseling center might offer as an alternative or supplementary aid to medication.
Prevention
Unfortunately, there is really no way to avoid an obsessive compulsive disorder for sure. However, once the symptoms present themselves, it makes sense to get help. The sooner you start OCD therapy, the more easily you’ll be able to manage and treat the condition.
