Biofeedback is a therapy technique used by doctors and mental health professionals that allows people to control bodily functions that usually happen automatically, such as blood pressure, body temperature, heart rate, and muscle tension. Though it is sometimes used to treat phobias, it’s more commonly used by doctors and therapists to help treat stress, headaches, insomnia, and blood pressure. It can even be used to help with long term chronic pain as well.
What Does Biofeedback Look Like?
There are three types of biofeedback that a physician or mental health professional can use to help people. The first type is Electromyography, and this involves using a device that measures muscle tension while a person employs a relaxation technique such as meditation, breathing exercises, or visualization.
The second type of biofeedback is peripheral temperature or hand temperature biofeedback. This technique uses a device that measures the temperature of the skin on your hands and gives you the idea to try and increase your body temperature through guided visualization with the help of a therapist.
The third type of biofeedback is heart rate variability, which measures your heart rate. This type of biofeedback therapy can be used in some cases to treat phobias since it helps people learn to slow down their heart rate and become more relaxed and calm. Having the power to lower your own heart rate helps people master their fears by conquering their own bodies.
Why Use Biofeedback?
Most people are able to use the technique after at least 12 sessions of biofeedback therapy. After this, they can try them at home with or without a kit. The techniques will allow them to control their blood pressure to relieve pain and also to control muscle tension to improve restless sleep and stress.
Biofeedback is a safe procedure when it is supervised by a trained doctor, psychiatrist, or other mental health professional. Many people enjoy biofeedback therapy because it puts them in control of their body so they can effectively manage their pain and stress without the use of drugs and chemicals.
